Welcome to Spell Surge, an epic vertical scrolling shoot ’em up where you control a powerful wizard battling waves of enemies and mighty bosses! Master your spells, upgrade your gear, and survive as long as you can.
Basic Controls
Movement
Touch anywhere on the screen and your wizard will follow your finger. Position yourself to dodge enemy projectiles and line up your shots!
Shooting
Your wizard automatically fires projectiles upward at enemies. No need to tap – just focus on positioning and survival!
The Mana System
Spell Surge uses a mana-based spell system with no cooldowns. Your strategic use of mana is key to success!
Mana Basics
- Mana Bar: Located at the top of the screen, shows your current mana
- Regeneration: Mana regenerates continuously during gameplay
- Spell Costs: Each spell consumes mana when cast – higher level spells cost more
- Overdrive Bonus: Casting spells at 80%+ mana provides bonus damage!
Special Buffs
- Arcane Mastery: Chain kills quickly to activate this combo buff – reduces spell cost by 50%!
- Desperate Magic: Activates at low health – reduces spell cost by 30%
- Arcane Surge: Temporary buff providing 5 seconds of FREE spell casting
Special Spells
Unlock and upgrade four powerful special spells. Tap the spell icons at the bottom of the screen to cast them!
Available Spells
- 🔥 Fireball: Launches homing projectiles that seek out nearby enemies
- ⚡ Lightning: Instantly chains lightning across all enemies on screen
- ❄️ Freeze: Releases a radial burst of ice shards that freezes enemies briefly
- 💨 Wind: Summons arcing boulders in a cone pattern
Spell Upgrades
Collect spell power-ups during gameplay to upgrade your spells from Level 1 to Level 4. Higher level spells deal more damage but cost more mana!
Power-Ups
Enemies and destructible objects drop various power-ups:
- Health: Restores your health
- Shield: Grants temporary damage protection
- Mana: Instantly restores mana
- Wand Upgrade: Increases your wand tier for more damage and projectiles
- Armor Upgrade: Reduces incoming damage
- Spell Power: Upgrades one of your special spells
- Arcane Surge: Grants 5 seconds of free spell casting
- Currency: Earn crystals to unlock permanent upgrades in the shop
Progression System
Wand Tiers (1-10)
Your wand automatically unlocks new tiers as you reach higher levels. Each tier increases damage and projectile count. When you reach the level-based tier cap, wand upgrades give Overcharge stacks instead, which enhance your next special spell!
Armor Tiers
Upgrade your armor to reduce incoming damage. Higher armor tiers provide better protection against enemy attacks.
Level Progression
- Enemies spawn faster and stronger as you progress
- Mini-bosses appear every 3 levels
- Major bosses appear every 5 levels with randomized attack patterns
- Background scroll speed increases with each level
Boss Battles
Bosses are powerful enemies with massive health pools and devastating attack patterns. Each boss has:
- Color variations: Different visual themes and elemental effects
- Attack patterns: Spread shots, spirals, cross patterns, burst attacks, and waves
- Phase transitions: Bosses change attack patterns at 50% health!
Strategy Tip: Maximize your mana usage during boss fights – mana regenerates faster during boss encounters!
Game Center Features
Leaderboards
- High Score: Compete for the highest single-run score
- Total Kills: Show off your lifetime enemy kill count
- Bosses Defeated: Track total bosses you’ve conquered
Achievements
Unlock 27 achievements by reaching milestones, defeating enemies, mastering spells, and completing challenges. Some achievements are hidden – discover them as you play!
Daily Streak System
Play every day to maintain your daily streak! Your streak counter appears on the main menu and contributes to special achievements.
Tips for Success
- Manage Your Mana: Don’t waste all your mana at once – save some for emergencies
- Use Overdrive: Try to cast spells when your mana is above 80% for bonus damage
- Chain Kills: Kill enemies quickly to activate Arcane Mastery and reduce spell costs
- Upgrade Wisely: Balance wand upgrades with armor and spell improvements
- Learn Boss Patterns: Each attack pattern has gaps – find them and exploit them!
- Collect Power-Ups: Don’t ignore dropped power-ups – they’re essential for survival
- Break Destructibles: Towers, chests, and barrels drop valuable power-ups and currency
Settings & Controls
Access the pause menu during gameplay (gear icon, top-right) to:
- Adjust music and sound effects volume
- Enable/disable haptic feedback
- Quit to main menu
